Selling our roads...

As the funding for transportation continues to decline througout the country, new and innovative strategies are being developed to help combat this decline. One of the newest strategies is leasing existing toll roads to conglomoartes who in turn pay the local DOT or city for the right to manage and collect the toll revenue for the term of the lease. One of the first such deals was the Skyway in Chicago. It has been leased for 99 years for a sum of 1.83 billion dollars. For more information click here...

The other toll road that has been leased is the Indiana Toll Road. This road has been leased for 75 years for a sum of 3.89 billion dollars. For more information on the Indiana Toll Road click here...

So is this an alternative that might work for Pennsylvania? According to Governor Rendell this alternative is something that the state is looking at instead of raising taxes. Stay tuned as we'll update with current information as the state moves forwad to solve its funding crisis
